Rugby in the East of Surrey
Surrey Young Carers
Football Tournament
The first annual
young carers football tournament was held on the 5th August at Electronic
Arts in Chertsey. Over 60 young carers from the county participated in the
single largest event ever organised by the project.
As well as football
matches the teams were able to participate in other activities such as
skills challenge course, keepy uppy competition, basketball, penalty shoot
out competition and a tour of electronic arts office.
The tournament was
going extremely well with England due to play France in the final, but
just before kick off the heavens opened and within minutes the pitch and
surrounding area was flooded. We all had to run for cover and found
sanctuary in the restaurant at electronic arts.
No Red Cards Were shown, Fair Play!
Thankfully we were
still able to play the final but this was played on a table football game.
France emerged as the winners of the tournament and the players were
presented with a shield and medals.
If you did not
participate in this tournament don't worry. We have already started
planning for next year and it will be bigger and better!
Reigate young carers Group for 8-12yrs
had a go at Fencing, one of England's top Fencers was on hand to give
careful instruction. Everybody had a go and enjoyed doing something a
little different. If you would like to take up Fencing as a hobby visit and you live in the east of Surrey: visit www.redhillandreigateepeeclub.com or contact your young carers Support Worker for more information.
One young carer (Barry) was lucky enough to meet and be pictured with Robbie Earle MBE, a former premiership and world football star, who is now an ambassador for sport and is seen regularly on television. Barry took part in a 3 day rugby school and thoroughly enjoyed his time. So much so, that he went on to join a team.
Reigate Rugby School shall be continuing their courses in the new year and will continue throughout the year for all children aged between 8 and 14 years of age, experience is not necessary for these fun events. The school comes highly recommended by Surrey Young Carers, who found them to be extremely professional, with also having a good understanding of the various needs and demands faced by young carers. If you would like to get involved with rugby and live within the East of Surrey please contact Philip Smith on 01737 224943. or Geoff Parks, Surrey Young Carers support worker on 01737 248111. for further information.
