SPEAK OUT! (the forum) The first meeting of the young carers forum took place at Avon Tyrell in the New Forest in April of 2004. The forum is being set up to ensure the project remains young carer led and that the views of young carers are sought at all times. Six young carers came away on the adventure weekend. The purpose of the weekend was to start thinking about the aims of the forum and how it would influence the development of the project. As representatives of the young people in the project the forum members also started to think about how the views of all young carers would be sought. The forum is met in May to discuss the practicalities of the work to be done. MEET THE MEMBERS: Claire: I am 16 & have left school. I enjoy singing and care for my mum. Chelsey: I am 14 & in year 9. WE WANT TO FIND OUT WHAT OTHER YOUNG CARERS WANT!We recently had a weekend away doing fun activities, a good chat about life as a young carer & what its like. We had debates/arguments! We want to SPEAK OUT! It is a place where young carers can speak openly & honestly about how caring affects them. We want to develop skills needed to lobby local & national policy making processes. But mostly, the Forum wants to influence the decisions that Surrey Young Carers Project makes & help the Project develop.
